Reversing Reflux, My Story.
When I was first diagnosed with Barrett’s, (8 years ago) due to GERD and LPR I was scared, appropriately so. I remember waking up from anesthesia after the endoscopy and the doctor telling me he was pretty sure I had a disease (Barrett’s) that would require lifetime medication. He laughed when I told him I would like to consider diet and lifestyle before committing to a lifetime of medication. “That won’t be possible”, he stated, finishing with, “This isn’t something that food can fix.” As a result, my rebelliousness kicked in. “I’ll prove him wrong” was my first thought.
Ironically, I was also attending nutrition school at the time, and assumed I could fix this on my own. So, I went home and started researching. And, I reached out to one of my teachers for some advice on where to start.
Recently, I was highlighted in an article on how I reversed my chronic reflux symptoms. Check out the article here for more information.
What I learned.
My research turned up interesting studies. Like the fact that taking PPI’s had a higher chance of causing stomach cancer than it did at preventing cancer due to Barrett’s. Why would I trade one chance of getting cancer for another? I also learned that with PPI’s there is an increased chance of nutrient deficiencies. And that lowering stomach acid, which as we know are why PPI’s exist, could actually contribute to reflux! OMGosh! That was all it took for me to find another way. I quit PPI’s within about a week of starting them. They gave me horrible stomach pain and I wasn’t thrilled about my findings anyway.
At that point, I decided to give diet and lifestyle a chance. What did I have to lose? Except for some pain!!
A Year of Healing.
Over the next year, I drastically changed my diet and lifestyle. And you know what? Not only was my next EGD negative for Barrett’s, HH, and irritation of the esophagus, which I knew due to the fact that I had no pain or symptoms, but I lost a few pounds, gained a ton of energy, and learned how to eat for better health. I did have the advantage of attending nutrition school around the same time but regardless, I put in the hard work and it paid off.
I hope some of you are inspired to do the hard work too and get yourself feeling better. We have this one life (as far as I know) and why would we want to live in pain unnecessarily?
You deserve to feel better now!
